St George The Great Martyr was a Christian Roman soldier who lived in the late 3rd/early 4th century. His father was Cappadocian and his mother Palestinian. St George's father was martyred and his mother returned to her homeland where she would raise her son. Once St George became of age he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the army and rose through the ranks of the military very quickly. St George would be sent to Nicomedia where he would be a member of the personal guard for Roman Emperor Diocletian.
In 303, Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered a total persecution of Christians across the empire. St George was ordered to take part in the persecutions and confessed to being a Christian and criticized the Emperors decision. Upon hearing this the Emperor ordered the torture and execution of St George. St George's execution was witnessed by Empress Alexandra and Athanasius, a pagan priest, who upon seeing St George's martyrdom and faith, became Christians and joined St George in martyrdom. St George is often depicted with a dragon in most Icons. The dragon depicting St George's victory over death and satan. Choosing Christ when faced with death.

Note on wood products - All wood warps, that is something you have to remember with these icons. Warping over time will occur but it wont affect the icon. We use Feed-N-Wax for all of our icons which is our wood sealant and we recommend touching up the icons with this product as needed. If you get water spots from having the icon blessed the easiest way to get rid of them is to apply the Feed-N-Wax product mentioned above to the areas with the water spots and they should go away.
Note that the icon you will receive will vary slightly from picture shown.
All of our icons are made to order, sculpted by Lydia Riley and made in Montana.
